Sacramento is the capital of California and the county seat of Sacramento County. Its 2007 estimated population of 460,200 make it the seventh-largest city in the state. Sacramento is the core business, governmental and economic center of the greater Sacramento metropolitan area, which includes El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties, with a combined population exceeding 2 million.

Sacramento is divided into four areas:

• Area 1: Central/Eastern, which includes Alkali Flat, Boulevard Park, Campus Commons, Dos Rios Triangle, Downtown, East Sacramento, Mansion Flats, Marshall School, Midtown, New Era Park, Newton Booth, Old Sacramento, Poverty Ridge, Richards, Richmond Grove, River Park, Sierra Oaks, and Southside Park
• Area 2: Southwestern, which includes Freeport Manor, Golf Course Terrace, Greenhaven, Curtis Park, Hollywood Park, Land Park, Pocket, Little Pocket, Mangan Park, Meadowview, Pocket, South Land Park, Valley Hi / North Laguna, and Z'Berg Park
• Area 3: Southeastern, which includes Alhambra Triangle, Avondale, Brentwood, Carleton Tract, College Greens, Colonial Heights, Colonial Village, Colonial Village North, Curtis Park, Elmhurst, Fruitridge, Glen Elder, Glenbrook, North City Farms, Oak Park, Southeast Village, Tahoe Park, Tallac Village, and Woodbine
• Area 4: North of the American River, which includes Natomas , Valley View Acres, Gardenland, Northgate, Woodlake, North Sacramento, Terrace Manor, Hagginwood, Del Paso Heights, Robla, McClellan Heights West, Ben Ali, and Swanston Estates.

Sacramento State is the major university in the city. Others include American River College, Sacramento City College, Cosumnes River College , and MTI College of Business and Technology, University of San Francisco regional campus, University of the Pacific -McGeorge School of Law, and US Davis School of Medicine. The UC Davis Medical Center, a world-renowned research hospital, is also located in Sacramento.
