Chesapeake is the third largest city in Virginia, with a population of over 220,000 residents. It is located in the South Hampton Roads section of the Hampton Roads region of eastern Virginia. It is one of the Seven Cities of Hampton Roads, all linked by the circumferential Hampton Roads Beltway. Chesapeake is close to Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.
Chesapeake has a mix of urban areas and protected virgin forests and wetlands, including a large part of the Great Dismal Swamp and canal. Because it is located on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, Chesapeake has miles of industrial, commercial and residential waterfront property.
Chesapeake was formally divided into six boroughs: South Norfolk, Pleasant Grove, Butts Road, Great Bridge, Deep Creek and Western Branch. Some neighborhoods include Benefit, Bowers Hill, Buell, Camelot, Crestwood (Washington Borough), Deep Creek, Eva Gardens, Fentress, Gertie, Gilmerton, Grassfield, Great Bridge, Greenbrier, Hickory, Hodges Ferry, Indian River, Mount Pleasant, Northwest, Oak Grove, Oaklette, Portlock, and Wallaceton. Many residents commute to work in Virginia Beach, Norfolk or Portsmouth.
Colleges and universities nearby include Tidewater Community College, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion, Hampton University, and Christopher Newport University.
